Choosing an Urn Material: Display or Burial

Choosing an urn involves more than its appearance. Where you plan to keep it can help you decide which material and design to consider. This guide is a starting point; always check the details of the individual urn before ordering.

Indoor display

Aluminium and brass urns are options to consider for displaying a memorial indoors. Choose a design that feels meaningful and a size that fits securely in your chosen space.

Keep the urn on a stable surface, away from moisture and places where it could be knocked over. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions for its finish rather than using abrasive cleaners or metal polish without checking first.

Cloisonné and decorative finishes

Cloisonné refers to a decorative enamel technique, not a separate base material. Check the product description for the underlying material and care instructions. An ornate finish does not by itself confirm that an urn is suitable for burial or outdoor exposure.

Burial

Before purchasing an urn for burial, check with your cemetery or funeral provider. Ask which materials they accept, whether there are size restrictions, and whether an urn vault or protective outer container is required.

Do not assume that an urn suitable for indoor display is also approved for direct burial. Suitability depends on the specific urn, its construction, and the cemetery’s requirements.

Biodegradable urns

If you want an urn intended to break down after burial, ask your funeral provider about a purpose-made biodegradable option appropriate for the intended setting. A metal urn should not be treated as a substitute for a biodegradable urn. This guide does not indicate that biodegradable urns are available in our store.

Outdoor placement

Do not assume a decorative urn is weatherproof. Before placing an urn outdoors, confirm that the manufacturer specifically approves it for that use. Rain, moisture, freezing conditions, and sunlight may affect an urn or its finish.

Placement in a niche

If the urn will be placed in a columbarium niche, confirm the permitted materials and the available interior dimensions with the facility. Check the urn’s full dimensions, including its lid and any decorative details.
